Below is a film about our Go4It Youth Group produced in March 2011 by Cem Kaymaz-Yildiz & Jason Inge of University of Northampton.
The Go4It! Youth Group addresses the needs for those with a diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome or Higher Functioning Autism who currently attend mainstream education. The charity has raised the awareness of this programme to a wider group of parents/carers and professionals in a direct response to the needs of this group and the demands of the family.
The parents have formed their own social/support group whereby they either remain at the centre for a cup of tea and a chat or they go offsite together. The Children and Young People Programmes Manager is available to offer any help and guidance too.
All staff are experienced in working with the young people and are continuing their professional development in the field of Autistic Spectrum Conditions and Special Educational Needs. Working with the young people in a social context gives us the opportunity to address any issues or behaviours that may hinder their ability to access activities in common with their mainstream peers, therefore, enabling them to continue to develop their social understanding and interaction.
This programme provides bi-monthly evening sessions for up to 15 young people. The voice and choice of the individuals are encouraged for them to plan and design out and about and, supplementary activities. This enables wider life skill experiences building upon their self confidence and self esteem.
