Type of Provision/Range of Need
Provision for pupils with moderate-to-severe learning difficulties. Some children may also have additional needs, including communication difficulties, physical difficulties and sensory impairments.
Admission Arrangements and Area Served
Admission is following referral from the Special Needs Assessment Panels. Most pupils will already have a statement of special educational need but occasionally a nursery age child may be assessed during their nursery year. The area served is Daventry and surrounding villages.
In the nursery all children have access to the full curriculum using elements of “High Scope”. Within the main school, pupils have access to the Foundation Stage and National Curriculum and delivery is within the classroom with support.
Organisation and Special Resources
The DSP has excellent exclusive accommodation including a large teaching area and a smaller room. There is also a disabled toilet, ramps into 3 classrooms and changing facilities. All staff are well trained and experienced in working with a range of special needs. There is close liaison between DSP and mainstream staff. Extra support is provided by speech therapist, medical officer, educational psychologist and welfare officer.
Home/School Liaison and Review
Home/school notebooks are used on a daily basis for children who have school transport. Parents’ evenings and more formal review meetings are held on a regular basis when required.
Visiting and Pupil Transport Arrangements
Parents and professionals are always welcome at the school. It is helpful if appointments are made. Where appropriate, pupil transport is provided in accordance with the Local Education Authority Transport Policy.
Some children transfer to their local school at the end of the nursery year, while others continue to the end of Year 2 at Southbrook Infant School. Transfer at 7 may be to the DSP at Southbrook Junior School, or to other mainstream or special provision recommended at the annual review.
