Children spend half of their lives asleep. Sleep is as important to children as adequate nutrition. Disturbance or restriction of sleep impairs learning, mood, behaviour and health. In children with additional support needs severe sleep problems may be ascribed to their condition and tolerated rather than addressed. But evidence suggests there is likely to be elements of learned behaviour in nearly all sleep problems.
Families of children with disabilities and/or additional support needs in Northamptonshire now have access to an appropriate family centred sleep service which works with families and local practitioners to identify and address sleep disorders.
