Volunteer

“Volunteering with Autism Concern gave me a real sense of purpose. I began to value myself and was able to enjoy the relationship I had with my son more. Volunteering has given me the confidence to move forward in my life." Lynette Emary

Investors in Volunteers Volunteers are the life blood of the work of the charity and provide an opportunity for many to actively support the work that we do. Often volunteers are service users who have been introduced to the broader portfolio of our work and want to be come more involved in helping us fulfil our mission.

We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds, ages and skills: we enjoy the opportunity it brings us to work with new people: we encourage active participation and involvement in all aspects of the work of the charity and value everyone’s contribution. Supporting the volunteer function in the organisation requires dedicated time and resources to make it a success. We are committed to retaining and supporting our volunteers for the benefit of the organisation, the membership and the volunteers themselves.

In 2009, we were supported by volunteers working in the following areas:

administration; PR, marketing and communications; research and service development; events management; pre-school projects; Information, Advice and Guidance helpline; specialist skills and targeted projects.

For the future we will look at ways of widening the volunteer base to encompass a greater diversity of skills, and will look to target particular skills to promote the volunteering for us as an attractive and mutually beneficial option.

We would love to hear from you if you would like to volunteer for us. There are lots of different opportunities to help:

  • taking calls on our Help and Advice Line (training given)
  • being involved in a new Parents/carers fundraising group
  • helping with office/admin work
  • supporting annual fundraising events
  • organising a small fundraising event yourself

Volunteer Qualities

  • An understanding of autism would be beneficial
  • Good communication skills and patience in dealing with people
  • A regular time slot to volunteer would be an advantage
  • Needs to provide own transport
  • Needs to be able to follow instructions and work on own initiative
